DESIGN & ARCHITECTURE (prefab) Images from Platoon via ArchdailyI have always been a bit dubious about shipping containers as architectural elements; my dad used to make them and I grew up around them, and thought that the dimensions were all wrong for people; there was not much that you could do in a 7'-6" interior (or so I thought). Also, they are monocoque construction; the walls are the structure. So when you start taking the walls out and replacing them with beams, pretty soon you have little more than the idea of a shipping container. That was my first thought when I looked at Platoon Kunsthalle , an arts facility by Graft Architects in Seoul, Korea, built from 28 shipping containers. The building uses the containers as a kind of building block, surrounding enclosing the space. The interiors of the containers are used for washrooms, offices and smaller uses.Looking at the construction photos still raises a lot of questions. Are they new containers, made specifically for the building? They sure look like it. This would negate the main benefit and feature of container structures, that they use an existing resource that is in oversupply. And this is Korea, a net exporter of containers where they are NEVER in oversupply; like China, containers go one way out of this country and pile up in the net importer countries. But it is a terrific looking prefabricated system that can be assembled quickly, even if they are custom built. It does appear to be insulated (the plans show some thicker walls) and the section shows radiant heating in the floor, but I cannot see any mechanical spaces or rooftop equipment. Nor does there appear to be any ductwork, which given the limited height inside shipping containers, would be visible in the open spaces. So it would appear that there is no air conditioning. In Seoul? Perhaps the uses of the building don't need it:PLATOON KUNSTHALLE provides showcases of underground artists, studio residencies and a fine selection of cutting-edge stage performances to introduce the energetic potential of subculture in Korea and Asia.Ultimately it is a big steel tent of a performance space built out of steel boxes, and a very attractive one at that. But I am not yet convinced that the idea of building it out of shipping containers is much more than an aesthetic gesture or a really practical, economical and functional building system.More pictures at ArchDailyMore Shipping Container Architecture:Crate Expectations: 12 Shipping Container Housing IdeasLottery Tower is Built From 55 Shipping ContainersBsq. Tags / Architecture & Design, buildings, Design, History & Factoids, military — WebUrbanist @ 11:00 am[ By Delana in Architecture & Design, History & Factoids. ]The military buildings of today are relatively bland and plain, but in centuries past military architecture was something to be admired. Military forts, whether they were stand-alone installations or incorporated towns within their walls, had to be tough enough to stand up to attacks and well-designed enough to effectively return fire when required. Star-shaped forts were a particularly interesting type of fortification. They first appeared around the time that gunpowder became commonly used in warfare; the unusual shape of the forts and the fact that they were made of hard-to-shatter brick (rather than the traditional stone) helped the forts stand up to cannonball fire. These incredible structures are among the most memorable, the most beautiful, and the most historically important star forts from around the world

Via Detail.deKaust Breakwater Beacon“Leading international design studio Urban Art Projects (UAP) in collaboration with Fairweather Proberts Architects have completed the 60m high ‘Breakwater Beacon’. The work is the centre piece of the new King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), a USD 7 billion world-class research institution located at Thuwal Point, overlooking the Safaa Harbor and the Red Sea, in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.Led by Daniel Tobin, Principal of Australian-based UAP, the design draws inspiration from ancient Arabic maritime traditions, in-region artwork and architectural detailing, linking to the marine ecology of the Red Sea. Breakwater Beacon’s complex structure is a collection of unique amorphous hexagonal sections stepping up out of the Red Sea into an elliptical spire. Engaging Fairweather Proberts Architects, an Australian firm who has successfully collaborated with UAP in previous public art projects, ensured the design intent was retained throughout the project’s development.Kraus Breakwater BeaconKraus Breakwater BeaconAcknowledging Le Corbusier’s control of light within the Notre Dame du Haut, the patterned skin of the atrium creates a dappled shaded effect, forming reverential interior spaces for communal gatherings with an amphitheatre and reflection pond. The design’s structure acts as a natural cooling tower similar to that of a minaret on a mosque. The tapered tower draws up the hot air, bringing in breezes at the lower level to cool the internal space and the surrounding plaza.Kraus Breakwater BeaconThe tower is divided into three sections, tapering from a base of approximately 30m x 25m to 3.0m x 2.5m at the top. It comprises of 187 individually cast hexagonal blocks, weighing up to 18 tonnes each. The individual internal hexagons were pre-cast off-site then lifted into place on site using a variety of cranes including one of the largest in the world, a 550 tonne mobile crane. The outer skin of the lower spire was completed by fixing the external pre-cast hexagonal elements, which slotted on to the corresponding internal hexagons to seamlessly conceal the in-situ pour. The dramatic upper spire of the tower is made solely from these pre-cast blocks. All construction of the pre-cast elements was completed within 50kms of the site ensuring the project was consistent with the studio’s sustainable design approach. Materials were selected for their durability and longevity, with a predicted life span of 100 years. For a high quality finish and appearance a slightly off white concrete was chosen for all precast elements.Kraus Breakwater BeaconKraust Breakwater BeaconBreakwater Beacon is part of a major international art programme at KAUST which celebrates the University as an international platform for collaboration and exchange. Curated and delivered by UAP, the primary focus of the programme is to interpret and present interdisciplinary art and design that stimulates creativity and interaction, drawing inspiration from KAUST’s unique geography, science and technology-based research, language, text, regional histories and traditions. The programme includes work by the renowned Swedish artist Carsten Höller, who is known for his Unilever installation at the Tate Modern, Cambodian artist Sopheap Pich and Scottish-based collaborative Dalziel & Scullion.”

Via MOCAView of main entrance and atrium, facing Euclid Avenue - Click image to enlarge———————————————————–“The new Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland will be forty-four percent larger than the Museum’s current, leased facility, and will demonstrate that a museum expansion need not be large in scale to be ambitious in all respects. Devised for both environmental and fiscal sustainability, the design for the four-story building is at once technically inventive, visually stunning, and highly practical. The project is designed by the internationally acclaimed firm Foreign Office Architects (FOA), London. FOA has responded ingeniously to the project’s roughly triangular site by designing a building with a hexagonal base that, with imperceptible changes in the shape of each story, rises to a square roof. Viewed from the exterior, the building will appear as an inventive massing of six geometric facets, some flat, others sloping at various angles, all coming together to create a powerful abstract form.———————————————————–View of secondary entrance, facing intersection of Mayfield Road and Euclid Avenue - Click image to enlarge———————————————————–Clad primarily in mirror-finish black Rimex stainless steel, the façade of the new MOCA will reflect its urban surroundings, changing in appearance with differences in light and weather. Window glazing will be tinted to assimilate with the reflective skin so that during the day the building will read as a unified volume, while at night interior lights will create a dynamic pattern on the dark surface.Three of the building’s six facets, one of them clad in transparent glass, will flank a public plaza. This will provide a public gathering place and also serve as MOCA’s “front yard,” and will be the site of seasonal programming. From here, visitors and passersby may look through the transparent facet, site of the Museum entrance, into the ground floor, a space intended for socializing and for civic and cultural events. While the building’s dark exterior will offer almost no hint of the interior massing and structure, the experience inside will be notably transparent. Upon entering MOCA, visitors will find themselves in an atrium from which they may visually grasp the dynamic shape and structure of the building as it rises. This space will lead in turn to the Museum’s lobby, café, and shop, and to a double-height multi-purpose room that will house public programs and other events. From here, visitors may take the Museum’s staircase—itself a monumental sculptural object—or an elevator to the upper floors.———————————————————–———————————————————–While the main exhibition gallery is on the top floor, all four floors of the Museum contain space for either exhibitions or public programs, with the second and third floors combining public and “back of house” functions. The second floor, for example, will house both exhibition workshops and a 1,500-square-foot public gallery, to be used for more intimately scaled exhibitions; consonant with the openness that is characteristic of the building’s interior, visitors approaching this gallery will also be able to glimpse the workshops. The third floor, home to MOCA’s administrative offices, will also include spaces for classes, lectures, and other educational programs. In keeping with the ways in which contemporary visitors engage with art, the new building will have wi-fi throughout, enabling the use of wireless devices for on-demand learning. MOCA anticipates that the building will receive LEED silver accreditation.———————————————————–Section with atrium, building form, and program distribution - click image to enlarge———————————————————–In addition to Foreign Office Architects, the design team for the new Museum includes executive architectsWestlake Reed Leskosky, headquartered in Cleveland and designers of more than fifty cultural buildings throughout the United States.” MOCA

from modostudio” The competition brief was the regeneration of an urban area called Ex Fonderie Riunite, a strategic area for the city of Modena with important historical value. The basic idea was the recovery of a former industrial building and a new detailed urban plan in the other areas of the competition. Our proposal for this existing industrial complex, characterized by historically protected office buildings, was to keep the identity as a symbol for the history of the Italian workers movement. The regeneration includes new uses and functions and the new spaces of the DAST faculty (Design, Art, Science and Technology). We proposed to create buildings of different heights with plans that follow the structure of the industrial building and preserve the existing fascinating spaces of the old plant. These new volumes will be detached from the ground and they will be covered, on the north and south facades with a golden perforated metal sheet. This particular material is the same that will characterize the exterior skin of the roof throughout the rest of the building. The golden colour of this new roof, the harshness of the metal material and at the same time, the softness of the perforated pattern will be able to evoke the past; a metal smelting complex building full of history, and at the same time to communicate unambiguously the birth of the new feature. The cladding will be seen from the railroad and from an adjacent bridge that connects the two parts of the city and will become a symbol for the city of Modena. The cultural destination of DAST, such as the School of Design, will give a new feature to the building as a vital place pushing research and innovation. The complex will also contain other features such as commercial areas and services in support of the DAST, creating an important centre for the city, available throughout the day.The new urban design provides maximum accessibility for new functions with the creation of a square outside the former building, which will become a commercial, residential and public park.”Source: modostudio

The idea of the ‘minimalist monolith’ is the conceptual key of the project and became a principle applied to all elements of the both the functional and construction programme, from the foundations up to the smallest finishing details.Davide Macullo Architects projected another stunning house located in the Swiss Alpine village of Lumino. The idea of the ‘minimalist monolith’ is the conceptual key of the project and became a principle applied to all elements of the both the functional and construction programme, from the foundations up to the smallest finishing details. The surrounding area is characterized by traditional store built houses, many of which date back centuries and are marked by their use of this single contraction material. The new house is intended of the vernacular; its exposed reinforced concrete from recalls the revered strength and resonates the presence of these old stone houses. Iñaqui Carnicero Alonso-Colmenares completed this house, called ‘pitch house’  in a small neighbourhood of Madrid in a place called “los Peñascales”, that mean something as well as great stones. The plot is characterized to have a great slope oriented to the south and have two great granite rocks partially covered by moss. The structure of the house at a functional level as formal is explained perfectly in section. The underground level is used to solve the encounter with the slope of the land.It incorporates two granite rocks, one of them structurally and other as an articulation that makes the main access to the house. The ceiling of the underground level generates the white floor made of calcareus stone that constitutes the noble plane where the daily life is developed. A single space opened to the south only close by glass that disappears to incorporate the water plane of the swimming pool in a first plane and the mount named “el pardo” in a second. This closure does not fit with the perimeter of the first floor but moves inside to generated two porches at the ends and a marquee on the front that allows the entrance of rays of the sun in winter and is protected of its impact during the warm months of summer. The first floor is been thought like a closed box made of concrete that floats over the glass of the ground floor. Here is where the rest of the rooms are organized as well as the zones destined to the study.A unique bay window located at 1,40 meter of height allows to trim the skyline of the landscape and uniformly illuminates the concrete ceiling. The independence of levels is only interrupted by two double heights that put in relation both spaces described previously. The economic restrictions have caused that the house is solved with the minimal possible gestures that nevertheless generates a great diversity of spaces and attractive situations.Via therewasrain

Waiting for the Wiel Arets' 6-million books, black, massive University Library, to be completed by 2004, the Utrecht University Campus, according to its best tradition, gives birth to another provocative and irreverent building: the NL Architects' BasketBar, which consists of a flat basket ground over a grand café room, as 15 x 15 meters flat extension of the previous bookstore, just on the back of the OMA's Educatorium. In the early 90's, OMA was to prepare the master plan for the renewed University Campus, which encompasses a lot of Dutch Second Modernity's exemplary buildings such as Mecanoo's Faculty of Economics and Management (1995), Neutelings Riedijk's Minnaert Building (1997), UN Studio's NMR Laboratory (1999) and OMA's Educatorium (1997) in fact. All these buildings are spread on a large site called De Uithof at the edge of the city, hosting about 30.000 among staff and students. The BasketBar, together with the Educatorium, represents the only extensive meeting place for all this population.Once again, the NL Architects -recently nominated for the NAi Prize 2002 with the Shop Interior Mandarina Duck in Paris, also exhibited in the Dutch Pavillon last Biennale of Venice- deal with the issue of functional and typological 'unespectedness', using the beloved but ordinary, and now even poetic, basket backboard.Daniele Mancini CAMPUS CITY. The campus of the University of Utrecht, de Uithof is developing from a mono-functional non-place into something that might be called a City: a rich amalgam of urban 'programs' and functions. The urban plan by OMA consists of a compact clustering of University related buildings: intensifying specific areas into a more urban condition and at the same time reinforcing the intrinsic qualities of the existing landscape.ISLANDS IN THE STREAM. The tool used to prevent the scattering of urban stuff over the entire area - to enhance City and Landscape at the same time- is the strong site boundary that is based on the existing buildings. All new substance should develop within these perimeters. The first building to fuck with the self-inflicted system is OMA's Educatorium: the 'wave' exceeds the boundary thus allowing sideway vistas from the 'tube'.IT'S A BAR. Since restrictions for housing on the campus recently were abolished and student apartments became imaginable here, nightlife became an issue as well: a local bar was needed. The Café should serve as the informal center of the campus; a relaxed meeting place for professors, researchers and students. The crossing of Heidelberglaan (the main access road to the campus) and Genevelaan seemed to be the best site for this enterprise, close to relatively public buildings like the Educatorium and the new Library and right under the Van Unnik Building, the massif 80 meters high 'logo' for the University as a whole.JACK BLOCK. The Van Unnik Building is constructed with the so-called Jack Block System: a surreal construction method that starts building the top floor on ground level (and actually completing it, like building an attic in the basement), then jacking it up to construct the next floor, again on the zero level. The last act is lifting all 21 stories to construct the first floor: a bizarre gravity-defying operation that sends Baron Von Münchhausen back to college.WELCOME. The Uithof café is a 15 x 15 meter extension of the existing bookstore. The remarkable flatness of that construction is extended with the oversized roof of the new bar. The complex looks 'crushed' by the Van Unnik. Since the floor height of the existing shop is not appropriate for a Grand Café the Bar is sunken in the ground: you enter on top of the counter and walk-in over the bar. The lowered position allows for a new perspective on the public square. Like the American Bar by Adolf Loos it attempts to combine intimacy with an extensive view.BOOKBAR. A connection between the bar and the bookshop is made; the 'reading table' will become point of exchange between the two.OUT LOUNGE. On the west flank there's a terrace for the afternoon. A field of cylindrically carved-out hedges of 1.2 meters high provide shelter, generate a series of cozy lounges, while at the same time still allowing eye contact with the other 'rooms'.POOL. The 'orange pool' brings together a sunken terrace, a mini amphitheatre and the access for the disabled: a cool mixture of people hanging out with drinks, skaters and people in wheelchairs.BASKETBAR. The XL roof of the café provides the ultimate location for a basketball court. The 'publicity' of its position creates the ultimate platform for the display of superior skill: show off, shoot hoop. Since the structure is so flat there's still a direct relation to the ground. From the elevated walkway system that connects most buildings on the Uithof the new ground level looks 'natural'. The middle circle of the court is made out of glass, establishing a visual relation between Basket and Bar.

05dec08The following Selexzy store is located in a former Dominican church in Maastricht, Netherland. The bookstore is designed by Dutch architects Merkx + Girod and has won the Lensvelt de Architect Interior Prize in 2007.Merkx+Girod architects have created a contemporary bookshop in a former Dominican church, preserving the unique landmark setting. The church has been restored to its former glory and the utilities equipment has been housed in the extended cellar.Text from worldarchitecturenews:The architects were commissioned by the Dutch bookseller to convert the forler Church into a modern bookstore. For the same client M+G had previously designed two bookstores in The Hague and Almere. The unique location in Maastricht however asked for a very different approach. The store demanded 1,200 sq m of commercial area where only 750 were available. The initial idea of the client to install a second floor within the church was rejected by the designers, because this would completely destroy the spatial qualities of the church. The solution was found in the creation of a monumental walk-in bookcase spanning several floors and situated a-symmetrically in the church. In doing so the left side of the church remained empty while on the other side customers are lead upstairs in the three- storey ‘Bookflat.’The ground floor gives room to several different book displays, information desks, magazine-stands and cash registers, all made of standard sheet materials in different colours and surfaces
