The idea of the ‘minimalist monolith’ is the conceptual key of the project and became a principle applied to all elements of the both the functional and construction programme, from the foundations up to the smallest finishing details.Davide Macullo Architects projected another stunning house located in the Swiss Alpine village of Lumino. The idea of the ‘minimalist monolith’ is the conceptual key of the project and became a principle applied to all elements of the both the functional and construction programme, from the foundations up to the smallest finishing details. The surrounding area is characterized by traditional store built houses, many of which date back centuries and are marked by their use of this single contraction material. The new house is intended of the vernacular; its exposed reinforced concrete from recalls the revered strength and resonates the presence of these old stone houses. Sitting on the edge of the old village, the house acts as a sort of bastion between the old core and the modern residential expansion.Via dagensdesign

Iñaqui Carnicero Alonso-Colmenares completed this house, called ‘pitch house’  in a small neighbourhood of Madrid in a place called “los Peñascales”, that mean something as well as great stones. The plot is characterized to have a great slope oriented to the south and have two great granite rocks partially covered by moss. The structure of the house at a functional level as formal is explained perfectly in section. The underground level is used to solve the encounter with the slope of the land.It incorporates two granite rocks, one of them structurally and other as an articulation that makes the main access to the house. The ceiling of the underground level generates the white floor made of calcareus stone that constitutes the noble plane where the daily life is developed. A single space opened to the south only close by glass that disappears to incorporate the water plane of the swimming pool in a first plane and the mount named “el pardo” in a second. This closure does not fit with the perimeter of the first floor but moves inside to generated two porches at the ends and a marquee on the front that allows the entrance of rays of the sun in winter and is protected of its impact during the warm months of summer. The first floor is been thought like a closed box made of concrete that floats over the glass of the ground floor. Here is where the rest of the rooms are organized as well as the zones destined to the study.A unique bay window located at 1,40 meter of height allows to trim the skyline of the landscape and uniformly illuminates the concrete ceiling. The independence of levels is only interrupted by two double heights that put in relation both spaces described previously. The economic restrictions have caused that the house is solved with the minimal possible gestures that nevertheless generates a great diversity of spaces and attractive situations.Via therewasrain

Waiting for the Wiel Arets' 6-million books, black, massive University Library, to be completed by 2004, the Utrecht University Campus, according to its best tradition, gives birth to another provocative and irreverent building: the NL Architects' BasketBar, which consists of a flat basket ground over a grand café room, as 15 x 15 meters flat extension of the previous bookstore, just on the back of the OMA's Educatorium. In the early 90's, OMA was to prepare the master plan for the renewed University Campus, which encompasses a lot of Dutch Second Modernity's exemplary buildings such as Mecanoo's Faculty of Economics and Management (1995), Neutelings Riedijk's Minnaert Building (1997), UN Studio's NMR Laboratory (1999) and OMA's Educatorium (1997) in fact. All these buildings are spread on a large site called De Uithof at the edge of the city, hosting about 30.000 among staff and students. The BasketBar, together with the Educatorium, represents the only extensive meeting place for all this population.Once again, the NL Architects -recently nominated for the NAi Prize 2002 with the Shop Interior Mandarina Duck in Paris, also exhibited in the Dutch Pavillon last Biennale of Venice- deal with the issue of functional and typological 'unespectedness', using the beloved but ordinary, and now even poetic, basket backboard.Daniele Mancini CAMPUS CITY. The campus of the University of Utrecht, de Uithof is developing from a mono-functional non-place into something that might be called a City: a rich amalgam of urban 'programs' and functions. The urban plan by OMA consists of a compact clustering of University related buildings: intensifying specific areas into a more urban condition and at the same time reinforcing the intrinsic qualities of the existing landscape.ISLANDS IN THE STREAM. The tool used to prevent the scattering of urban stuff over the entire area - to enhance City and Landscape at the same time- is the strong site boundary that is based on the existing buildings. All new substance should develop within these perimeters. The first building to fuck with the self-inflicted system is OMA's Educatorium: the 'wave' exceeds the boundary thus allowing sideway vistas from the 'tube'.IT'S A BAR. Since restrictions for housing on the campus recently were abolished and student apartments became imaginable here, nightlife became an issue as well: a local bar was needed. The Café should serve as the informal center of the campus; a relaxed meeting place for professors, researchers and students. The crossing of Heidelberglaan (the main access road to the campus) and Genevelaan seemed to be the best site for this enterprise, close to relatively public buildings like the Educatorium and the new Library and right under the Van Unnik Building, the massif 80 meters high 'logo' for the University as a whole.JACK BLOCK. The Van Unnik Building is constructed with the so-called Jack Block System: a surreal construction method that starts building the top floor on ground level (and actually completing it, like building an attic in the basement), then jacking it up to construct the next floor, again on the zero level. The last act is lifting all 21 stories to construct the first floor: a bizarre gravity-defying operation that sends Baron Von Münchhausen back to college.WELCOME. The Uithof café is a 15 x 15 meter extension of the existing bookstore. The remarkable flatness of that construction is extended with the oversized roof of the new bar. The complex looks 'crushed' by the Van Unnik. Since the floor height of the existing shop is not appropriate for a Grand Café the Bar is sunken in the ground: you enter on top of the counter and walk-in over the bar. The lowered position allows for a new perspective on the public square. Like the American Bar by Adolf Loos it attempts to combine intimacy with an extensive view.BOOKBAR. A connection between the bar and the bookshop is made; the 'reading table' will become point of exchange between the two.OUT LOUNGE. On the west flank there's a terrace for the afternoon. A field of cylindrically carved-out hedges of 1.2 meters high provide shelter, generate a series of cozy lounges, while at the same time still allowing eye contact with the other 'rooms'.POOL. The 'orange pool' brings together a sunken terrace, a mini amphitheatre and the access for the disabled: a cool mixture of people hanging out with drinks, skaters and people in wheelchairs.BASKETBAR. The XL roof of the café provides the ultimate location for a basketball court. The 'publicity' of its position creates the ultimate platform for the display of superior skill: show off, shoot hoop. Since the structure is so flat there's still a direct relation to the ground. From the elevated walkway system that connects most buildings on the Uithof the new ground level looks 'natural'. The middle circle of the court is made out of glass, establishing a visual relation between Basket and Bar.

05dec08The following Selexzy store is located in a former Dominican church in Maastricht, Netherland. The bookstore is designed by Dutch architects Merkx + Girod and has won the Lensvelt de Architect Interior Prize in 2007.Merkx+Girod architects have created a contemporary bookshop in a former Dominican church, preserving the unique landmark setting. The church has been restored to its former glory and the utilities equipment has been housed in the extended cellar.Text from worldarchitecturenews:The architects were commissioned by the Dutch bookseller to convert the forler Church into a modern bookstore. For the same client M+G had previously designed two bookstores in The Hague and Almere. The unique location in Maastricht however asked for a very different approach. The store demanded 1,200 sq m of commercial area where only 750 were available. The initial idea of the client to install a second floor within the church was rejected by the designers, because this would completely destroy the spatial qualities of the church. The solution was found in the creation of a monumental walk-in bookcase spanning several floors and situated a-symmetrically in the church. In doing so the left side of the church remained empty while on the other side customers are lead upstairs in the three- storey ‘Bookflat.’The ground floor gives room to several different book displays, information desks, magazine-stands and cash registers, all made of standard sheet materials in different colours and surfaces

The atmosphere, architecture and design should act as a support for the book world, and deliver a pleasant environment were the content and the aesthetics of the books were the main characters. The project should solve the coexistence of three main book subjects: illustrated books (architecture, design, art, photography, landscaping, cooking and children’s books), novels and medical books. With a neutral, sober and atemporal aesthetic, the architecture solves the problem through light, proportion and space. The main design decision was to understand the context and location of the shop: an irregular space with a 10 meter facade and a 5 meter height. These details were the basis to define a new way of approaching a commercial space. The second floor was conceived to use the front of the shop, leaving a double height access and bookshelf area. The 3.8 meter high perimeter was used to create a grand bookshelf for the illustrated books. The novels and children’s books were located in a floor level area, while the second floor was left exclusively for medical books. The entrance door is a 5 meter high, three sheet folding iron structure that inserts into a lateral marble wall. The tour through the store begins in the exterior, were the shop window was conceived as a piece of continuous furniture for book exhibition, cash desk, counter and consult desk. Once in the inside of the store, the grand bookshelf leads the route through the different areas. The materials used in this project were open pore travertine marble and crystal for the facade; black iron for the entrance door, paquio wood for the bookshelves and lapacho wood for the floors, both of which are native Bolivian woods.

London architects Brisac Gonzalez have completed a multi-purpose hall at Aurillac in France. The space can be used for concerts, sports events, trade shows and theatrical productions.Brisac Gonzalez won the job at an architectural competition in 2004.Here’s a bit of info from the architects:–Aurillac is at the edge of France’s Massif Central mountain region. The site is situated near the city’s main train station, an area that is under regeneration to provide a stronger link with the city’s historic centre. The building is a new venue for theatre, concerts, fairs and sports events. It will contain retractable seating and demountable stage for versatility. The main space will be able to accommodate up to 4500 people during performances.Three ribbons of concrete that vary in shape and texture define the building. Their juxtaposition delineates the different zones of the building: entry, storage and back of house facilities. The upper ribbon is made of prefabricated concrete panels with a regular grid of glass bricks. It creates a nine-meter high cavity of varying width that contains the building’s services and technical access.Fluorescent lights with colour filters within, will allow the building’s temperament to continually change in the evenings.

Source: dezeenArchitect Nicos Kalogirou and student Evangelos Kotsioris have completed the interior of a book store and publishing house in Thessaloniki, Greece.Glass panels arranged in a spiral create the shop windows and display space.Lighting is provided through an angled, translucent glass structure hanging from the ceiling and the back-lit shelving that frames the shop counters.Other materials include steel, silver-lacquered laminated wood panels, clear Plexiglass and grey flooring. The interior was completed in 2008.The following text is from Nicos Kalogirou:–Bookshop/publishing house ‘sophia’Thessaloniki, GreeceThe transformation of a former pesticide warehouse into an inviting, ‘transparent’ bookshop and a small publishing house gave the chance to experiment with multiple glass layers, triangulated surfaces, distorted geometries and non-standard construction methods in a manageable scale. Two vertically folded, spiraling, glass trapezoids form the labyrinth-like shop windows and a recessed entrance. Clear volumes of ever-increasing height towards the interior of the spirals serve as display surfaces on multiple levels. The multiplicity of the glass layers generates unexpected idols and multiple reflections that change dramatically according to natural and artificial lighting conditions. The angular, winding forms of the two service stalls result from the distortion of an initially rectangular, 15m. long, linear piece (as requested by the client). Their geometry is complimented by the sphenoid forms of a custom-made, back-lit trapezoid shelf system that stands behind them. Stalls and shelves direct visually to the inner part of the elongated plan.A triangulated back-lit ‘cloud’ surface hanging from the double-height void acts as a lighting body. The angled steel and glass staircase leads to an interior balcony with an office (overlooking directly the entrance below) and a small conference room.To maximize construction time, singular pieces were cut by CNC (computer numeric control) machines while the seemingly singular elements of the shelf system are actually the result of an irregular placing of 3 shelf units that create single and double height shelf surfaces. Additionally, all internal vertical support elements of the stalls are broken down to only 2 repeated pieces. Above: stallsThe biggest part of the low budget was used in favor of the clear and translucent safety glass while for the rest of the elements the following rough materials with minimum treatment were chosen; uncolored protected steel, rough silver lacquered laminated wooden panels, clear Plexiglas and reflective heavy-duty industrial flooring in light gray.
